Undo the Barriers of Communication

It is extremely important that what we speak in words and languages is not only heard but acted upon by the recipient in its true letter and spirit. We have often found that there are many slips between the cup and the lip. Hence it is very important in all walks of life that we seek acknowledgements in the form of understanding what the other person has understood in terms of what has been spoken.

If the chord is set right and it is attuned to the intended delivery, then the results are brilliant. However, there are few challenges or what we call as the barrier of communication:

  1. The time that we spend. In today’s world, we have several modes of communication but we have no time to seek confirmation on what is understood
  2. One is bombarded with zillions of information and hence processing the same for delivery will depend upon one’s own judgement and hence it might differ from what you intended to deliver
  3. The intrinsic difference between listening and hearing is important to be understood by both parties for any communication to succeed. Our common dialogues are “ I heard you” which does not give one the comfort that the activity will be done in its desired outcome. If one gets certain queries and clarifications upon a thread of communication, it implies “listening” happened.

Some quick tips to enhance the power of communication

  • Set the clarity on what you want to communicate.
  • How you communicate is another aspect which is critical to attract the attention span
  • Being original while communicating is important to deliver authenticity in communication
  • One have to be wedded with the aspect that one wants to communicate so that the circle of influence is enhanced
  • Seek confirmation on what is understood; seek affirmation on how the same will be put to use; set timelines for review.
  • In the race of “No time to stand and stare” it is important that meaningful time is spent on the subject to ensure right message is delivered and understood for intended outcome.

  1. Wonderful articulation! Setting the tone and the clarity towards what is it that needs to be communicated cannot be overstated. This also goes a long way in ensuring the rest of the pointers remain in the speaker’s favor…such as retaining the attention span of the audience, having a grip/influence on the circle and thus ensuring the intended outcome has been meaningfully conveyed by the end of it all.

PS:- After going through the 5th quick tip pointer, it is now clear to me as to why in a team meeting, after explaining each individual aspect regarding any project/requirement, a pause is always taken and people are encouraged to reconfirm what they have understood about the subject and how do they plan to deliver on it. 😀
