Leadership Perspective : Is Multitasking strength?

Thought Provoking :

In today’s world, where instant gratification is the rule of the day … starting from 2 mins Maggie to 50 worders blurb and acronyms that define the emotional state of being…do introspect to critically review if “Multitasking ability “is a strength or weakness?

In simple language, Multitasking is the ability to switch tasks; as the brain’s cognitive ability does not allow to perform cognitive tasks simultaneously. It performs, stores and them again re-focus resulting in delay and / errors.

Well, the answer is far from few wherein each would argue with colossal of merits and demerits…. I consider Multi Tasking as a MYTH based on practical experiences

I had always considered it to be a strength in my formative years  as it helped me discharge several regular day to day routine work with aplomb …yet over time and working for almost two decades now, balancing both the family responsibilities and corporate accountability, here are few practical takeaways …

  • If your strength is in multitasking you are actually thinking ahead on the next and hence your focus on the present is not 100 percent….and neuroscience findings do write about 40% decreased productivity.
  • It is not the Whole You in terms of your attention and concentration in that specific object /activity resulting in errors.
  • The chances of losing internal energy quickly rather than holding it is exacerbated and hence the burn-out at work is higher.
  • As a sentient being, all your senses work with signals in tandem but each performing its specific task. You are ONE so it’s ideal that at a given Point in Time you do perform one task ONLY.
  • Through the lens of “ Advaita Vedanta” philosophy, it is propagated that “You” the doer of all actions needs to perform each task with a mental alertness that differentiates the ego “You” from thy “Witness Consciousness” only to realise the undifferentiated “doer” which is the Supreme Commander…. This realisation by itself invokes the realisation of Oneness and thereby Concentrated Single Task yields better quality output.
