Leadership perspective : Appreciate the Regular

Be it at workplace, at home or in the community at large, we applaud and appreciate when a crisis situation has been successfully neutralised or managed. We recognise the employees who have recovered the loss caused due to an error ; we applaud the brave-hearts who have just doused the fire in the multiplex caused due to some malfunction of parts, we express our gratitude when some authority ensured that fraudsters have been nabbed… in all these cases, headlines are made, intranet portals of workplace is adorned with appreciation, gratitude expressed in WhatsApp groups, applause poured… But hardly we take time to pause and think, let alone to appreciate the people who ensured that the crisis does not occur.

We do not recognise the efforts or the discipline and dedication that is displayed day in and day out to ensure that nothing malfunction, no work is left unattended; no errors occur; no flaws in the system…. Have we ever thought why?

This is because we take things for granted. Behind every successful transaction be it verbal or non verbal there are these unsung hero’s who meticulously carries out their duties, without any expectation in return.

On those countless days where there has been no issue of orderly norms as all controls and measures are executed not by chance but by greater oversight and vigilance… frauds do not occur because the deterrence is strong… fires do not occur due to short circuit or any other reason as because safety norms are followed… countless financial transactions take place seamlessly just because the norms and procedures are followed. Crisis is averted long before it comes to the public eye. And it is this absence of crisis in our everyday life is basically the highest form of competent skillset. So, it’s time that we respect the normalcy and build on that.

Recognise those quiet individuals, the silent workers who ensured that everything works ideally so that crisis does not occur and good times prevail. They are the people who believe in the karmic mantra of

Karmanye Vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana |
Ma Karma Phala Hetur Bhur Ma Te Sangostv Akarmani ||

It means: “You have a right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, nor be attached to inaction”

As Leaders of your workspace; living community; identify those heros and take a pledge to Recognize them with Respect to appreciate the “ Regular”
